Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.27%
Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy , Consumer Discretionary and Real Estate sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.27%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ), which rose 10.49% or 0.79 points to trade at 8.32 at the close. Meanwhile, Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX: ABX ) added 6.35% or 1.55 points to end at 25.97 and Intact Financial Corporation (TSX: IFC ) was up 5.08% or 14.03 points to 290.26 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were TerraVest Industries Inc (TSX: TVK ), which fell 10.40% or 14.04 points to trade at 120.90 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ) declined 4.34% or 0.16 points to end at 3.53 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ) was down 4.06% or 0.56 points to 13.23.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 499 to 424 and 107 ended unchanged.
Shares in BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ) rose to 52-week highs; up 10.49% or 0.79 to 8.32. Shares in Intact Financial Corporation (TSX: IFC ) rose to all time highs; rising 5.08% or 14.03 to 290.26.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.82% to 14.79.
Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.18% or 5.41 to $2,927.19 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.80% or 2.05 to hit $71.27 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 2.56% or 1.97 to trade at $75.03 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.09% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.33% to 0.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 107.86.
