Canada stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.53%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT , Telecoms and REITs sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.53%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ero Copper Corp (TSX: ERO ), which rose 6.70% or 1.26 points to trade at 20.08 at the close. Meanwhile, Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ) added 5.20% or 8.94 points to end at 181.02 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ) was up 4.97% or 0.94 points to 19.85 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Canadian Tire Corp Ltd (TSX: CTCa ), which fell 7.81% or 12.29 points to trade at 145.11 at the close. Mullen Group Ltd . (TSX: MTL ) declined 7.31% or 1.04 points to end at 13.18 and Sun Life Financial Inc. (TSX: SLF ) was down 7.30% or 6.18 points to 78.45.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 549 to 358 and 105 ended unchanged.

Shares in Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ) rose to 3-years highs; gaining 5.20% or 8.94 to 181.02.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.77% to 15.20.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.99% or 28.99 to $2,957.69 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.08% or 0.06 to hit $71.43 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $75.16 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.77% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.00% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.77% at 106.99.
